Moonrise On Piazzale Michelangelo

Moonrise On Piazzale Michelangelo

I’ll never forget this moment. My wife and I along with a friend of ours were in Piazzale Michelangelo overlooking Florence for sunset. Of course this was for my benefit and they were just there for the heck of it. Anyway, so I was busy firing away doing cityscapes with the afterglow and they were just chatting away and freezing their unmentionables when all of a sudden, I noticed another photographer whip his camera around. Our friend exclaimed “Hey look!” and then I saw it. As the sun was setting, the moon was also rising from behind us. I quickly set up my tripod in a new spot and fired a series of images. Now this is how I saw it but I had to composite two images together. The moon was shot at about 1/125th while the statue was around 1/30th. I also had to focus on the moon at infinity, fire away, then focused into the statue and got that image.

  1. Excellent shot! There is just no way to get the same result on a single shot, so composite is in my opinion still the best option. I have done a couple composites myself.

    • Thanks Gracie! I’ve done composites back in the days when I shot using slide film using multiple exposures and masking with your hand or a piece of black cardboard. Tedious but challenging and you don’t see the results until you get your slides back from the lab! I really love digital 🙂
